How We Helped Others
With Publishing

Dr. Lucija Lapuh

I participated in the course “How to publish in peer-reviewed journals”, during my PhD studies at the Anton Melik Geographical Institute ZRC SAZU in Slovenia. My main motivation to attend this course was to learn more how to structure the paper, with the additional challenge of writing as a non-native English speaker.

Thanks to TRESS ACADEMIC, I successfully submitted a paper proposal for publication to the international open access journal Regional Studies, Regional Science. During the process of writing, the TRESS ACADEMIC handbook was very helpful. I’m proud to say I now successfully published a paper entitled: “Socio-economic characteristics of resilient localities – experiences from Slovenia”, detailing local resilience after the economic recession.

I am thankful to Dr. Gunther Tress for the useful information that I received during the training. Although publishing in peer-reviewed journals requires good research foremost, Gunther helped me with the writing skills needed to publish, as well as the courage and persistence needed during the editing process. It is because of his enthusiasm, tremendous knowledge and experience in this field, that I put him in the acknowledgements of my paper.”

My knowledge of peer-reviewed publishing was very limited before I took the course on how to publish a paper by TRESS ACADEMIC. It was fascinating to get a short overview of the situation in many other fields. The best part of the course was all the material we got to plan our own papers: all the steps were summarised into the handbooks and some of the best working sheets imaginable.

Every time I have to write something, regardless of the language, and whether it’s peer-reviewed of not, I use that manual and feel confident I can finish the paper on time.

This course is a “must do” for all academics. Reviewers would be very happy if more researchers took this course, because much less effort would be needed for revisions.”

I attended the course “How to publish in peer-reviewed journals” at the beginning of my PhD-studies. Writing scientific papers had always seemed like a daunting task, but this course was a tremendous help. I was able to kickstart my writing process by following the step-by-step guide provided in this course, and published three articles in two years; two of them as first author, the third as single author. The structure of the course was brilliant, with recipe-like guidelines and highly skilled instructors that were patient and outgoing.

This was probably the most useful course I have ever taken and I would say it is a must-have for any PhD student!”

I’m a PhD student in the field of computational biology and already have contributed to a few papers. However, having never actually composed a paper from scratch, but wanting to publish my current research soon and in a ‘high impact’ journal, I took the course “How to publish in peer-reviewed journals” with Gunther Tress. Gunther, as a former editor himself, provided tons of interesting and useful information on how to successfully compose a paper— covering topics like how to select a suitable journal, how to cleverly write different sections of a paper, how the peer-review process works and more. I used the course to create a first draft of my paper, working in all information and suggestions I received during the course and have hopes to be able to submit my manuscript soon!

I can absolutely recommend the course for every PhD student and probably even more experienced researchers. It gives a perfect overview with detailed information on the topic, has a very comfortable atmosphere and working with Gunther was both an interesting and pleasant experience. Thank you for a great course!”

With TRESS ACADEMIC, you learn from the best. During a recent PhD-meeting of Oldenburg University (OLTECH) graduate school, we came to the question: “which course do you as a PhD student suggest your new colleagues to attend?” Most of the students mentioned “How to publish in peer-reviewed journals” by TRESS ACADEMIC!

Attending this 3-day course was truly the best choice I could have made for my PhD. Each day I traveled to Oldenburg filled with enthusiasm to get more information about the various aspects of writing and publishing in journals. Since I was beginning to write a paper, the handbook that Dr. Gunther Tress gave us helped me greatly to understand how I should organise my thoughts, and how to orient my way of writing from beginning to end. I really recommend this course to all students who are wishing to publish, especially if you are at your starting point, because I believe that this course can even help you sketch your project plan in a better way.”

Missing name!

I can only say, thank you so so much! Your training books are always laying around my desk and they are so so useful! I have to tell you that in the last 2 weeks I’ve had 2 papers accepted: One as first author and one as second author. Now I am writing my next paper for my PhD and the writing goes smoothly and quickly simply by following your tips.”

I am a research fellow of the Swiss National Science foundation, and my core interest is wildlife epigenetics. Wildlife research often entails inter- and trans-disciplinary projects. Consequently, it is frequently challenging to produce high quality publications that are interesting and satisfying for readers from non-overlapping fields.

The TRESSACADEMIC paper publishing course was tremendously helpful for me to get a particularly tricky manuscript at the crossroads of genomics, phylogeny and ecology smoothly through the publishing process.

All in all, the course enabled me to gain much tighter control of writing for different academic audiences.”

Since 2012, Dr. Gunther Tress has taught the course “How to publish in peer-reviewed journals” more than eight times for staff members of the DLR (German Aerospace Center)  site at Oberpfaffenhofen.

The course participants have always evaluated the courses, as well as the educational concept, as “outstanding”. In addition, Dr. Tress has successfully supported management and selected scientists in the development of a publishing strategy for the entire institute.

We look forward to continuing our cooperation with TRESS ACADEMIC.”

Helmholtz Zentrum München offers young scientists, especially graduate students, the opportunity to improve their general professional skills and particularly their ability to peer review. Papers are the culmination of years of research, and publication is an important next step. It is essential that they give constructive feedback, check whether the article works for the journal, and improve the quality of the article. Therefore, our HR Department of Training and Development invests in the best training and support to achieve those objectives. The guidelines issued by journal editors and publishers do simply not suffice.

The course, “How to publish in peer-reviewed journals” offered by TRESS ACADEMIC was admitted in the Helmholtz training program in 2010 and I can say that the training conducted by Gunther Tress has become an undisputed success story, attended by over 400 young researchers. According to the evaluation results available to me- the participants’ feedback has been outstanding over the years. I look forward to continuing the good cooperation with TRESS ACADEMIC.”
