Artificial intelligence is changing academic writing faster than almost any previous technological development. Researchers increasingly use AI to support planning, drafting, revising and editing, yet many remain uncertain about where AI genuinely adds value and where human judgement must remain fully in control.

This workshop provides a practical framework for integrating AI into academic writing without compromising scientific integrity, intellectual ownership or publication quality.

What topics do we cover?

Part 1 – Understanding AI in Academic Writing
What AI can and cannot do for academic writing: opportunities, limitations and realistic expectations.

Part 2 – The Responsible Author’s AI Workflow
Applying AI along the stages of writing a paper — from first ideas and literature to drafting, revising and summarising — while remaining intellectually in control.

Part 3 – Ethics, Integrity and Intellectual Ownership
Publisher expectations, disclosure, confidentiality and responsible authorship — including a small-group exercise with the Decision Framework, and your own principle at the end.

How is it taught?

The workshop combines short expert inputs with demonstrations, live polls, small-group work, discussion, practical examples and guided reflection. Participants work with realistic academic writing situations rather than learning software commands or prompt engineering.
